When it comes to strategist roles in Canada’s defence industry, few can boast the kind of intellectual freedom that Calian Group’s Kevin De Snayer can. As the Ottawa-based services, solutions and technology’s Director of Technology Solutions and Critical Infrastructure, De Snayer is tasked with following and experimenting with emerging technologies that will be used by the Canadian intelligence community—quantum computing, cutting-edge espionage hardware and practical AI to name a few. “Whether that’s something that’s new or been around for a while, I like to call them weak signals, things that are just starting to get into the industry,” he says.

Calian will support Ex CITADEL BONUS in December 2023 at the Joint Force Training Centre in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The exercise is held annually to train NATO’s Rapid Reaction Corps (RRC) headquarters staff for a high-intensity campaign. Ex CITADEL BONUS will include a land-focused component with conventional and non-conventional adversary forces, alongside a component based in the Baltics as part of a NATO collective defence scenario.
On Exercise LOYAL LEDA 24, Calian will be supporting the development of exercise material for the Grey Cell, providing a Senior EXCON Advisor, and a subject matter expert for opposing forces focusing on non-linear operations. LOYAL LEDA 24 will include military and civilian participants from NATO members to provide a comprehensive training experience.
Google Cloud has engaged iSecurity, a Calian company, along with their partner MD&A Health, to produce in-depth documentation to help healthcare and medical research organizations consider Google Cloud as a platform of choice. The companies outlined their findings by way of a Threat Risk Assessment (TRA) and a Privacy Impact Report (PIA) available to download—which can be used by Google as a “seal of approval” for its cloud platform.
RF over IP is the ability to digitize and transport RF signals over an IP network without data loss, removing many limitations found in analog RF. This emerging technology enables new services and capabilities within the ground station and satellite network that were not possible in the analog approach. Calian AT will build prototypes and conduct testing in our manufacturing facility, including field trials over a satellite.
